Tally (UMD, Camera delegation)

The modern broadcast system contains a vast array of devices that either produce, display or 'consume' tallies. Most of these devices will produce or receive the tally information in different ways using different protocols and interfaces. Tally requirements can be very small and contained, but some can be very large systems that are spread across geographical locations.

TSL is the world leader in tally control. It enables the flexible configuration of tally signals to meet the needs of even the most complex broadcast environment or production. TSL Control accommodates small centralised systems that can communicate with a huge number of third-party devices, to large distributed, multi-studio systems accommodating dynamic room and resource delegation.

All these systems can be specified to be redundant and resilient, local, or geographically distributed to suit each customer requirement and deployment environment, with a simple and well-understood system for the control of tallies across the entire broadcast operation.

Use Case: 7 Production

7 Production, a leader in 4K and HD Broadcast solutions and Live technical Event support, faced the challenge of finding a comprehensive Broadcast Control System for their 4K OB Truck.

With operations across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Jeddah, Lebanon, Finland, and the UK, they needed a system that could control all devices, including vision mixers, routers, and multiviewers, and required installation and commissioning. Collaborating with BSS Dubai, 7 Production chose TSL Control with its integrated tally solution, deploying it into their OB truck for complete signal and signal chain management.

7 production - tally

In the demanding world of live broadcast production, reliability and flexibility are key. 7 Production found TSL Control to be an ideal solution, offering both robustness and versatility. Tony Jabbour, Head of Engineering and Operations at 7 Production, praised the system for its simplicity, competitive pricing, and excellent support from the TSL Team. The familiarity of their engineers with TSL Control, already being used in their other OB trucks, further eased the integration process. TSL's ability to incorporate protocols native to major manufacturers was a significant advantage, providing seamless connections and control over third-party equipment.

The implementation of TSL Control enabled 7 Production to connect and control various devices, enhancing their workflow efficiency. For instance, the Kahuna 9600 Production Switcher could be fully integrated with real-time signal flow information and dynamic updates.

The Sirius 800 Router offered a comprehensive overview of signal flows, while the Lawo MC2 36 allowed external control of the matrix, fader gains, and events. Additionally, the Snell MV Series Multiviewers benefited from instant updates and system alerts.

This unified control and tally system not only streamlined operations but also offered both capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) savings. The flexibility of TSL's solution meant that it could be comfortably used in traditional, software-defined, or hybrid transitional systems, reducing rework errors, supporting system expansion, and simplifying maintenance, thereby minimising total cost of ownership.

Virtual Control Rooms

TSL Control demonstrated the power and flexibility of virtual control rooms. With a virtual control processor deployed in the virtual private cloud (VPC), real-time production control and tally are running alongside the media processing platform GV AMPP. Connected to the virtual control processor, physical operator panels, such as the USP3-16, are used to control routing and media processing, providing operations with a traditional workflow across the virtual media processing platform for Fuse Technical Group and All Mobile Video at Chelsea Studios in New York.

The TSL control processor was used to monitor and control AMV's on-prem equipment and their Grass Valley AMPP-based capabilities, bridging the gap between virtual media processing and fixed studio resources. This allowed TSL Control to provide comprehensive broadcast control for the event, without the need for a traditional control room.
